New Routines

Things to remember when you take your baby out for their first outing: take a diaper bag. Although the timing of our first Dr appt was not the best - seeing that it was our first morning home and a long night had made it difficult, we did make it to the Dr on time. I even remembered to pack myself a snack and some water, but no supplies for Olive. Turns out we didnt need anything, but we had a good laugh at our bad parent skills.

Olive's weight had been up and down in the hospital. Most babies loose some weight after birth, but if it is too much and you are trying to only nurse, they really want to give you formula. We made it during our hospital stay with her weight going from 7lbs 12oz to 7lbs 2oz and then back to 7lbs 7oz. Once we made it to the Dr on Friday, she was 7lbs. The Dr gave us some pointers about nursing and scheduled us for another appt today. We had some ups and downs with the feeding over the weekend, but today she was back up to 7lbs 8oz. Hopefully this is a trend and some of the pointers we got again today will help me with some of the nursing problems.

Yes, it is VERY normal for the weight to go down. Doctor's always make you get a little scared about this even though it is normal. I think it's so you'll be on top of things. The first week or so we'd wake Eli up to breast feed him. Sometimes using a damp cloth and taking off his clothes to keep him awake. Since he was gaining, after that we just fed on demand. This will all get easier and easier with time. You just have to be patient. Good luck. Feel free to email me if you have any questions you think I could answer.

Also, with an 8 oz. weight gain, it sounds to me like you are doing a great job breast feeding! I think ALL babies that are breast fed lose weight at first. At least I've never heard of one who hasn't.

Page, I'm impressed you all made it on time! Our first time we were late, and I brought the diaper bag but forgot my own purse with the insurance cards and money...the office staff were laughing at me ;-) Ahh, good times. It will get easier! Also I stayed in my maternity clothes for at least a few weeks, sorry for forgetting to tell you about that. I'm so impressed with your breastfeeding progress, keep up the great work! Love, Michele

NURSING IS HARD!!!!!! It's amazing. And I absolutely LOVED doing it (nothing like quiet nursing time with your baby) but it is really hard. Or was for me anyway. Twice! Hang in there. Give a ring if you want to commiserate about cracked nipples. ; >

She is GORGEOUS.
